Do not use steel pipes as a substitute for ringlock diagonal braces

Recently, some construction sites have adopted steel pipes as substitutes for ringlock diagonal braces. In response to this situation, we will introduce some potential issues that may arise and hope to draw more attention from those who misuse ringlock scaffolding.

Similarly, we analyze this phenomenon from two perspectives:

1.Safety

The connection from the load node to the bearing node of the ringlock diagonal brace can effectively transfer the horizontal load of the entire support structure, without generating additional bending moments on the scaffolding posts. Additionally, the ringlock scaffolding coupler is used for the vertical diagonal brace and node, ensuring firmness and reliability. The vertical ringlock diagonal brace is a fixed-length pole, placing minimal demands on workers during the construction process. It can be installed in one step, and the likelihood of the installation angle not meeting specification requirements is very low.

On the other hand, pipe and coupler scaffolding employs steel tubes as vertical cross braces, which are connected to vertical posts via swivel clamps. It is impossible to guarantee that the diagonal braces can connect every node, which will inevitably generate additional bending moments and affect the bearing capacity of the vertical posts. The cross braces are connected to the frame through steering fasteners, and the construction quality cannot be ensured. Therefore, if the clamps are not tightened sufficiently, the horizontal load of the frame cannot be effectively transferred. The angle of the cross brace support is temporarily determined on-site, resulting in significant randomness and uneven quality.

2.Cost

We selected the same project and conducted a relevant cost analysis. Currently, the rental cost of circular scaffolding is calculated based on weight (the weight of scaffolding per unit volume, known as steel content).
Using the table provided above, we calculated based on simple weight: the weight per meter of the ringlock diagonal brace is only 60% of that of the steel pipe diagonal brace, which results in a reduced amount of steel used.
